About Area Units

Area is a measure of the two-dimensional space occupied by a flat shape. The SI unit for area is the square meter (m²). Common metric prefixes apply to square units but are squared in conversion (1 km² = 1,000,000 m²). Traditional units like acres and hectares remain important in land measurement, while square feet and square meters are commonly used in construction and real estate.

Did You Know?

The acre was originally defined in the Middle Ages as the amount of land that could be plowed in one day by one person using a yoke of oxen. It was standardized as 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters. The hectare (10,000 square meters) was introduced during the French Revolution as part of the metric system and is now used worldwide for measuring land area.
